Nederland, as you might have guessed from the town’s name, has long had a connection with The Netherlands.

Before Sam Conger discovered silver in the nearby mountains in 1869, Nederland was a ranching community.

After Conger’s discovery, the community that had been called Brownsville, Dayton, or Middle Boulder turned from a ranching community to a transportation and supply center for the booming town of Caribou. When a Dutch company, The Mining Company Nederland of The Hague, bought the  Caribou Mine, the community took on the name of Nederland.

At its peak, Caribou had several hotels, including the Sherman House, the large white building on the right, and a school, the smaller white building on the left.

As Caribou grew, so did Nederland. The Hetzer Hotel rented rooms and sold groceries.
