…chess rules. Seriously. We have been having fun and some of the students are becoming better than I am. Which leaves me a bit conflicted, but optimistic.
We are entering our 9th week of chess club and our group is STILL growing. I never would have imagined that we had so many chess players in town! The best part, students are coming with background knowledge of the game, meaning they’ve played before, and despite their being some very competitive games and personalities, the level of maturity and sportsmanship surpasses that of some adult softball leagues. There are some obvious goals that we aim for with this group, but certainly character development, honor and perseverance are among the underlying goals. We couldn’t be prouder of our kiddos that come to challenge themselves and their friends every week!
Some highlights have been the back and forth for top player in the room, which seems to change weekly. What amazes me about this is the level of mutual respect and sense of honor that comes with these competitive students. However – the highest compliment I can pay to our top and older players is their patience and willingness to work with the younger, less experienced students who join us. The mentorship that we are seeing warms my heart more than an extra spicy bowl of chili. It’s that good!
Anyway, for those reading this, if you have a child participating, thank you! It’s so stinkin fun!
If you would like your child to participate, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and I will see what I can do about finding more transportation or starting another session!
